Naval Binoculars - 19th Century
Naval Binoculars - 19th Century enscribed on the barrels with U.S. Navy, Day and Night Signal Glass, and hand engraved with the owner's name, city, and state. The binoculars are in working order and were previously owned by Herbert D. Remsen of Port Chester, N.Y. Remsen was employed as a mechanical engineer by the Russell, Burdsall, and Ward Bolt and Nut Company that was established in Port Chester, New York in 1895. The company supplied bolts and nuts to the maritime industry which is probably where Remsen acquired the binoculars. Remsen is listed on a patent for a Bolt Cutting Machine in 1915 with Ward. Ward, also a mechanical engineer built one of America's first concrete houses in Port Chester for his mother who had a fear of fires. The house is known as Ward's Castle today and is a popular tourist attraction. It is said that Ward actually set a fire in the dining room on the house to prove to his mother that it was fire proof. The binoculars were manufactured by Lamier Paris and has a slight ding on one of the eye pieces, but are otherwise in excellent, age appropriate condtion.
